Frequently Asked Questions

Why have furniture custom made?

Most store-bought items are mass produced to basic sizes and with limited options. These items also generally do not have the individual customer in mind. For example, our house was built in 1920. Big box furniture stores do not make things that fit perfectly in our oddly spaced nooks. Custom furniture allows you to have that perfectly sized table or bookcase you need.

I design and build one project at a time with materials that are hand picked to meet client specifications. High quality materials do not make custom furniture expensive; it is labor. Each piece I create is handcrafted to heirloom quality, which takes time.

How does a custom commission work?

The process of commissioning a custom piece of furniture starts with an initial consultation. This could be an email exchange, a visit to the shop, or a phone call. This discussion focuses on the bigger details, what type of furniture, wood species, dimensions, and the design. Generally, from this consultation, we can generate a price range for the commission. If this price range works with the client’s budget, we ask for verbal commitment to the project.

The next step is finalizing the design and cost of the project. Once approved, we ask for 50% retainer to place the project in the shop project queue. Depending on the style or type of the project, 3D CAD renderings may be utilized in the design process.

Time frame for final delivery is based on current work in production, plus the time to build your piece of custom furniture. The shop typically carries about a 4-to-6-month lead time. Final payment is due after the project is complete but prior to shipping or delivery.

Once we start your project, we welcome our clients to follow along on social media, or even better drop by the shop to check up on the process and see your custom furniture being made.
